Ashley Cowan is a producer and co-founder of London production companies VR City and East City Films. Ashley started his career working on music and live entertainment shows for MTV, Channel 4 and ITV before setting up East City Films with his co-founder Darren Emerson to produce youth focused entertainment content for big brands and international broadcasters. In 2014 he put on a VR headset and his world changed and VR City was launched. Driving VR City through this new and exciting medium, Ashley’s mission is for the company to bring storytelling and purpose to VR for a growing audience, and to consistently push the creation of emotionally transformative experiences.
Chief Creative Officer & Co-Founder
Darren is a producer, director and co-founder of London production companies VR City and East City Films. After studying film making at university, Darren started his professional career at MTV. Over the last 15 years he has gone on to produce everything from music videos, multi-camera OB’s, to documentaries filmed in Serbia, India, Myanmar and Nigeria. Darren is the producer and director of the VR documentaries “Witness 360: 7/7” and “Invisible”, the latter winning the first ever VR commission at Sheffield Doc/Fest in 2016. These films continue to be recognized at international film festivals such as Cannes du Marche, IDFA, Docville and MIFF. He has also been invited to speak at VR labs and panels at the BBC, CPH:DOX, IDFA Doc Lab, BFI Future Film Fund, i-docs, One World Humanitarian Film Festival, EDEF and Cannes.
Dominic de Terville
Director of Commercial Partnerships
Dominic joins VR City having held a number of commercial roles for leading entertainment, production and news brand organisations including Sky, Zodiak Media and London Evening Standard. He has developed and brokered award-winning sponsorship deals across broadcast, print, digital and events; developed market-leading advertiser funded programmes for major broadcasters and run some of the UK’s most prestigious events including the London Evening Standard Theatre Awards. Dominic joins VR City having worked with an incredible range of brands across all categories including Burberry, L’Oreal, Panasonic, Nike, Moet & Chandon, Citi, RBS, Diageo,Westfield, Domino’s, O2 and Hiscox.
Head Of Post Production
Graduating with a BA Hons in Film Production, Conan honed his craft as an editor from within the ranks of MTV, before spending 7 years working as a freelance editor throughout the London creative community, cutting packages for everyone from Disney to the Tate and has now taken on the challenge of leading the execution and development of post at VR City.
Assistant Creative Director
Jem joins VR City with a wealth of experience in a variety of media, ready to take on the challenge of driving the company’s fierce commitment to creative excellency alongside CCO, Darren Emerson. He has spent two years as in-house director at East City Films where he has created music videos, documentaries, commercials and short films for some of the worlds biggest and most innovative artists, musicians and brands; from short film collaborations with Punchdrunk Theatre, commissioned by Dazed, to music promos for Ella Henderson, and TV commercials for luxury whisky brand Macallan. Jem also directed our VR documentary on the “Exit Festival”, and our “In the Gym with…” series. He has also worked as a Co-producer on our award winning VR documentaries “Witness 360: 7/7” and “Invisible”.
Matt has worked across both the creative and commercial side of the TV industry, he has managed numerous channel launches (MTV, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon & NickJr) for Viacom International Media Networks, Commissioned content for MTV International, Executive Produced shows and formats for the likes of MTV and Discovery and held senior management roles at International Media Networks and Independent Production Companies. His work has seen him broker content deals with TV Channels, Brands, Production Companies and Distribution Platforms across the world. He is passionate about VR and excited to see how traditional content platforms engage with such a new and exciting technology. Like the rest of the VR City team, Matt believes in the technologies ability to bring an audience closer to the narrative and it’s ability to deliver emotionally transformative experiences.
